Best Silicone Food Storage Bags in 2026: Stasher vs Zip Top vs Cheap Packs

Quick verdict

Buy Stasher if you want one bag that seals, goes in the oven, and lasts. Buy Zip Top if you want something that stands up and stays open while you fill it, made in the USA. Skip the $15 twelve-packs unless the listing actually says platinum-cured silicone. Cheap zip bags are a different product.

The Stasher review on this site already answers “is one $13 sandwich bag worth it?” This piece is the comparison: Stasher vs Zip Top vs the bargain bin, and which job each one is actually for.

I compared materials, seals, and independent tests (Consumer Reports, Serious Eats, EatingWell). I am not claiming a week of meal-prep in my own fridge. Platinum-cured silicone is the line that matters. Peroxide-cured cheap bags can be food-safe and still be a worse product: thicker odor, worse seal, fillers.

What “platinum-cured” actually means

Silicone is cured with either platinum or peroxide. Platinum curing is more expensive and does not leave the same residual byproducts. That is why Stasher and Zip Top cost what they cost. A bag that only says “food-grade silicone” may still be peroxide-cured with fillers. If the brand will not say platinum, treat it as a maybe.

Silicone is not plastic. It also is not glass. It is the middle: no microplastics from the bag itself, still a synthetic, still not the thing you want on an open flame.

Best overall: Stasher sandwich bag

Stasher Premium Silicone Sandwich Bag (28 oz) is the default. Pinch-Loc seal, platinum silicone, freezer to 425 F oven, sous vide, dishwasher. About $13 for one bag, less in a pack.

What it is good at: flat storage, snacks, leftovers, sous vide. What it is bad at: standing open while you spoon chili into it, and carrying soup sideways. The seal is not a Ziploc. Press the whole length. If soup is the job, use a jar.

Starter set if you do not want to guess sizes: Stasher 4-pack (snack, sandwich, 2-cup, 4-cup).

Best to fill with one hand: Zip Top

Zip Top sandwich bag is platinum silicone, made in the USA, stands up, stays open, zips shut. No separate lid. No plastic slider. Serious Eats and Consumer Reports both noted the convenience. They also noted leaks when the bag is not upright. Treat Zip Top as a flexible container, not a dry-bag.

What about the cheap 10-packs?

Amazon is full of $15 silicone zipper bags. Some are fine for dry snacks. Many use a zipper track that traps gunk, stain badly, and never list the cure. I am not linking a random pack as “safe.” If the price looks like disposable plastic, the silicone probably was made like disposable plastic.

If budget is the constraint, buy two Stasher sandwich bags. Using two real bags beats owning twelve bags you do not trust with hot leftovers.

How to choose in 30 seconds

  • Leftovers, freezer packs, sous vide: Stasher.
  • Fridge organization, scooping food in: Zip Top.
  • Liquids on their side: neither. Use glass.
  • Kids’ dry snacks: either. Zip Top is easier for small hands to stand on a counter.

The Bottom Line

Stasher is still the bag I would tell someone to start with. Zip Top is the better object if you hate wrestling a floppy mouth. The cheap packs are how people try silicone once, get a greasy zipper, and go back to Ziploc. Don’t do that.
