Quick verdict
Buy bars, metal, and a brush whose handle is not petroleum. Best overall shampoo: HiBAR Moisturize fragrance-free bar (soap-free, cardboard, made in Minneapolis). Best toothbrush: Brush with Bamboo (castor-oil bristles, still a polymer). Best razor: Merkur 34C. Cartridge plastic is the thing we are leaving. A bamboo brush with mystery nylon is a half-swap. We do not call that best.
The bathroom is where the house still looks like 2005: a row of bottles, a cartridge razor, a toothbrush that will outlive you in a landfill. Microbeads in scrubs are mostly gone. Congress banned them in rinse-off cosmetics in 2015. The bottles stayed. (FDA, Microbead-Free Waters Act FAQs)
The “antibacterial” pump is not a health upgrade. In 2016 the FDA took triclosan and triclocarban out of consumer washes because manufacturers did not show they were safer for daily use, or better than plain soap and water, at stopping illness. (FDA, Skip the Antibacterial Soap)
Toothbrushes are a plastic object you put in your mouth twice a day. A 2025 paper in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety (Wang, Zheng, Peng, An, Chen, and Wei) measured microplastics coming off popular Chinese toothbrushes and toothpastes. Average toothbrush release was at least 2.33 million particles per person per year, mostly into wastewater, not a proven dose in your bloodstream. The authors wrote that the products they tested do not directly contribute to the health risks tied to microplastic exposure. The useful fact is still the object: a petroleum handle and nylon bristles shed plastic, then you throw the whole brush away. (doi:10.1016/j.ecoenv.2025.118694)
I compared current spec sheets, packaging claims, and listings. I have not run a bathroom lab. Where I say a bar lasts as long as bottles, that is the brand’s wash-count, not a shower I timed.
What to look for
- The product is the package. A shampoo bar in cardboard is the swap. A “clean” liquid in HDPE is still a bottle.
- Soap-free if it is for hair. True soap (saponified oils, high pH) can leave a film in hard water. Syndet bars wash like shampoo. Body soap can be actual soap.
- Bristles, not just the handle. Most “bamboo” brushes still use petroleum nylon. Plant-based nylon is still nylon.
- Metal that takes a standard blade. A safety razor is steel and brass. The cartridge is plastic you rebuy.
- Deodorant, not a plastic antiperspirant stick. Aluminum-free bars will not stop sweat. They are for odor. Say that out loud before you buy one.
Best overall: HiBAR Moisturize fragrance-free shampoo bar
Soap-free. Sulfate-free. Fragrance-free. FSC cardboard. Made in Minneapolis. This is the bar I would put in a shower if the job is “get the bottle out” without a perfume lecture. HiBAR uses surfactants (including sodium cocoyl isethionate), not a hunk of hair soap. That is why it behaves like shampoo instead of like a Castile bar on your head.
The Moisturize formula is the dry/frizzy one. Maintain is the everyday/oily one. Volumize is the fine-hair one. Start with Moisturize if you do not want to guess. Pair it with the matching conditioner bar so you are not keeping one plastic bottle “just for conditioner.”

The other bar brand: Ethique
Ethique is the New Zealand B Corp that made solid bars in compostable paperboard a normal grocery-aisle idea. No SLS on the current Gentle unscented bar. Cocoa butter, babassu, no added perfume. If fragrance is the reason you are here, this is the Ethique SKU, not the citrus one.
Amazon listings for Ethique move in and out of stock. Buy it on the brand site if the cart is empty. Same product: a concentrated bar in a box, not a pump.
Direct: Ethique Gentle unscented shampoo bar.
Some “shampoo bars” are still soap, and some still hide SLS or sodium coco-sulfate behind “coconut-derived.” How to read that label is the same job as laundry: laundry detergent without SLS.
The toothbrush catch
A bamboo handle is the easy part. The bristles are the contact. Almost every bamboo brush on Amazon is nylon 6 or 6,6 in a wood stick. That is less handle plastic. It is not a plastic-free mouth.
Brush with Bamboo is the listing that at least names the polymer. Current brand spec: USDA Certified 100% Biobased bristles from castor bean oil (nylon-11 / PA-11), FSC bamboo handle, paper box, no tape. Castor nylon is still a plastic. It is not home compostable. The company says so. What you are buying is plant carbon instead of petroleum carbon, plus a handle that is not polypropylene.
Keep it dry between uses. Bamboo molds if it lives in a puddle. Replace it on the same 3-to-4-month calendar as any other brush.

Best razor: Merkur 34C
Chrome-plated brass. Closed comb. Two-piece head. Short heavy handle. Made in Solingen. This is the starter safety razor people actually finish using. It takes any standard double-edge blade. There is no plastic cartridge and no subscription chip.
It is not “effortless.” You learn an angle. You will nick yourself once. Then you own a razor for a decade and buy steel, not a four-blade plastic head. For legs and arms the same tool works. A pivoting head (Leaf and similar) is a different, more expensive object. Start with the 34C unless you already know you want a three-blade leaf.
Blades: a 100-pack of Astra Superior Platinum. Paper envelopes inside cardboard. Pennies a shave.

Shave soap can be the same Dr. Bronner’s bar you already put on a dish. Canned foam is a steel can plus a plastic valve. Skip it.
Deodorant in a box
A plastic stick of “natural” deodorant is still a plastic stick. Ethique pours the same job into a solid bar in compostable paperboard: magnesium hydroxide and zinc oxide for odor, bamboo powder for damp, no aluminum salts, no baking soda. It is not an antiperspirant. You will still sweat. The Fragrance-Free bar is the one if essential oils bother you.
Direct: Ethique Fragrance-Free deodorant. HiBAR sells a fragrance-free deodorant too if you want the Minneapolis brand in one cart: HiBAR fragrance-free deodorant.
Give it a week if you are coming off aluminum. That is a body change, not a product failure. If you need a clinical antiperspirant for a medical reason, this page is not that product.
Body soap
This is the one place true soap belongs. Dr. Bronner’s peppermint Castile bar is saponified organic oils in a recycled-paper wrap. No pump. No “antibacterial” sticker. Peppermint is strong. Baby unscented exists if you do not want the tingle. The bar includes Regenerative Organic Certified palm oil. That is not a hidden line. If palm is a hard no, pick another oil bar and stay in paper.

Do not wash your hair with it and then blame “shampoo bars.” That is soap. Use HiBAR or Ethique on the head.
Toothpaste without the tube
Tubes are plastic laminate. Bite ships chewable bits in a glass jar with an aluminum lid, then compostable refills. First order is the jar. Direct: bitetoothpastebits.com. They sell a fluoride version on their site. A lot of Amazon listings are the fluoride-free nano-hydroxyapatite tabs. If you want fluoride, order from Bite, not a random two-pack.
Tablets feel like chalk until they foam. That is the format, not a defect. I have not run an enamel study. Dentists still care about fluoride more than they care about your jar.
What we do not call best
A “sustainable” bottle. PCR plastic is still plastic on the shower floor. Fine as a stopgap while you finish the pump you already own. Not a pick.
Generic bamboo toothbrushes. Handle is wood. Bristles are usually the same nylon as Oral-B. Buy Brush with Bamboo if you are going to bother with bamboo at all.
Cartridge razors, including the metal-handled ones that take plastic heads. The waste is the head.
Native, Dove, and the rest of the drugstore deodorant aisle. Plastic barrel. Even the “refill” is usually more plastic.
Loofahs made of polyethylene mesh. A real loofah is a gourd. The dollar-store pouf is a plastic net.
Drawbacks
- Bars die in a puddle. Put them on a ceramic or metal dish that drains. Not a plastic soap saver in a wet corner.
- Bamboo molds. Stand the brush up. Let it dry. Same as a wood cutting board, smaller and in a steamier room. See wood boards for the maintenance idea.
- Safety razors have a first week. Short strokes. No pressure. Watch one video from a wet-shaver, not a 12-gadget haul.
- Natural deodorant is not a rewrite of sweat. If you need aluminum, you need aluminum. Do not pretend a zinc bar is a clinical stick.
- There is no fully plastic-free toothbrush that feels like a drugstore brush. Castor nylon is the honest compromise. Boar or miswak is a different tool.
How to choose in 30 seconds
- Shampoo bottle: HiBAR Moisturize fragrance-free. Ethique Gentle if you already shop that brand.
- Toothbrush: Brush with Bamboo. Skip the 30-pack of unnamed nylon.
- Razor: Merkur 34C plus Astra blades. Throw out the cartridge caddy.
- Deodorant: Ethique Fragrance-Free bar, or HiBAR’s fragrance-free deodorant.
- Body: Dr. Bronner’s bar in paper. Not as shampoo.
- Toothpaste: Bite from the brand site if you want the glass jar. Keep fluoride if your dentist said fluoride.
Who should skip it
- You like your 5-blade cartridge and you are not going to learn a safety razor. Fair. Then at least get the bars and the brush.
- You need a prescription antiperspirant. Buy that. Use bars for hair and body.
- You wanted a 12-product “zero waste bathroom makeover” with cotton rounds, silk floss, and a shampoo tin. This page is the five objects that remove the most plastic. The rest can wait.
The Bottom Line
A plastic-free bathroom is a bar of shampoo, a metal razor, a brush that is honest about its bristles, a deodorant that is not a stick of polypropylene, and soap in paper. HiBAR for hair. Brush with Bamboo for teeth. Merkur 34C for the cartridge pile. Ethique or HiBAR for underarms. Dr. Bronner’s for the rest of you. The pump bottles are optional the day you finish them. They were never the requirement.
