Best Glass Food Storage Containers in 2026: The Lid Is the Catch

Quick verdict

Buy a glass bowl with a lid that is not plastic. Best overall: Bentgo Signature (glass lid, silicone gasket). Best on a budget: IKEA 365+ with the bamboo lid, not the plastic one. Caraway is the nicer matching set if you already like their cookware. America’s Test Kitchen still picks Rubbermaid Brilliance for the seal. Those lids are plastic. We do not call that best.

The leftover pasta in the takeout box is the whole problem. Heat plus plastic is how you get the chemical smell. A 2023 University of Nebraska-Lincoln study in Environmental Science & Technology put numbers on it: microwaving plastic containers released millions of microplastics and billions of nanoplastics per square centimeter of plastic. “Microwave safe” usually means the tub will not melt. It does not mean nothing moved into dinner. (Hussain et al., 2023, University of Nebraska-Lincoln)

Glass does not do that. It is inert. It does not stain like cheap plastic. You can see the chili. That is the swap.

I compared current sets against spec sheets and the labs that actually drop-test this stuff: America’s Test Kitchen (updated late 2025), Serious Eats (Feb 2026), and Wirecutter (June 2026). I have not run my own leak tests. Where I say leakproof, that is their result, not a test I ran.

Most “best glass” lists are ranking the seal. That is why Rubbermaid and Pyrex keep winning. This page ranks the lid, because you came here to get plastic off the food.

If you want the three-material overview (glass vs steel vs silicone), the older food storage roundup is still there. This page is glass only, because that is the microwave job.

The lid is the catch

Same story as the Hydro Flask. The body is the healthy part. The lid is where plastic sneaks back in.

A glass bowl with a plastic snap lid is a half-swap. Your leftover soup sits in glass. The lid that sits on the rim is still plastic. If food touches that lid – soup sloshing, a container on its side, a tight stack in the fridge – you still have plastic-to-food contact. Heat makes that worse. Do not microwave with a plastic lid on, even “vented” or “BPA-free.”

BPA-free is not a gold star. We covered the swap-to-BPS problem in BPA-free bottles.

Silicone is not plastic. It is still a synthetic. It is the gasket this site will live with. See Is Silicone Safe? if you want the longer version.

What to look for

  • Lid first. Glass + silicone, steel, or bamboo. Plastic lids are the thing we are trying to leave.
  • Tempered soda-lime vs borosilicate. US Pyrex and Rubbermaid Brilliance are tempered glass. Bentgo Signature is borosilicate, which handles thermal swings a bit better. Both beat a deli tub. Neither is unbreakable on tile.
  • Oven rating. Glass only, plastic lids off. Always preheat. Cold glass into a ripping-hot oven is how people shatter a dish.
  • Nesting. A set you cannot stack ends up in a cabinet you never open.

Best overall: Bentgo Signature Glass

Borosilicate glass containers. Tempered glass lids with a silicone seal and a steam valve. No plastic in the lid. America’s Test Kitchen called it the best “almost all-glass” option. You can microwave with the lid on because the lid is glass.

Start with the 12-piece (6 containers + 6 lids) if you are replacing a junk drawer of deli tubs. The 8-piece is cheaper if you only need rectangles. They nest. They are heavier than a plastic-lid set. Glass lids add weight. That is the cost of not using plastic, and it is the point.

Best on a budget: IKEA 365+ with bamboo

IKEA sells the glass box and the lid separately. That is the trick. Skip the plastic lid. Buy the bamboo lid. You get a glass-and-wood stack for less than one Bentgo piece, and nothing plastic touches the food.

Bamboo lids are not a soup-in-a-backpack seal. They are fine for fridge leftovers and dry food. Do not soak the lid. Do not run it through a screaming-hot dishwasher if you want the wood to last.

If you want the matching set: Caraway

Borosilicate glass, ceramic-coated steel lids, no plastic on the lid, a storage rack so the lids do not pile up. Oven-safe glass. You pay for the catalog look. It is still a real plastic-free pick, not a compromise. I would not start here unless you already like their cookware and want the boxes to match.

The plastic-lid sets testers like

America’s Test Kitchen and Serious Eats still pick Rubbermaid Brilliance Glass for the seal. Wirecutter likes Pyrex / Snapware locking lids. Those bowls are glass. The lids are BPA-free plastic with a silicone gasket. That is why they win leak tests, and that is why they are not a “best” on this site.

If you are really on a budget and a plastic-lid set is the only way the swap happens this month, you can use them as a stepping stone. Then treat the lid as the problem it is:

  • Never microwave with the lid on. Heat the glass. Park the lid.
  • Do not pour boiling sauce against the lid.
  • If soup sloshes into the lid, you still have plastic-to-food contact, and some of those additives can move into the food. A tight seal is not the same as a safe one.
  • Replace the set with Bentgo or IKEA bamboo when you can, instead of buying a second plastic-lid set “because it was on sale.”

Rubbermaid 9-piece (the leak-test winner): Amazon. Pyrex Simply Store 9-pack: Amazon. Snapware locking lids: pyrexhome.com.

How to choose in 30 seconds

  • Default: Bentgo Signature. Glass lid. That is the one this page is for.
  • Watching money: IKEA 365+ glass with the bamboo lid. Not the plastic lid next to it on the shelf.
  • Matching Caraway cookware: Caraway boxes.
  • Only if a plastic-lid set is the difference between switching and keeping the deli tubs: Rubbermaid or Pyrex, lid off the microwave, plan to replace the lids later.
  • Lunch bag, drop-proof, no microwave: skip glass. Use stainless. The kids lunch box piece is the right page for that.

The Bottom Line

Glass is the container that matches the microwave science on this site. Buy Bentgo, or IKEA with bamboo, so the lid is not plastic. A cheaper Pyrex set is still a glass bowl under a plastic hat. Fine as a stopgap if that is what gets the takeout tub out of the fridge tonight. Not the thing to call best.
