Quick verdict
Buy a bottle where the water does not touch polypropylene. Best overall: Klean Kanteen Reflect 27oz (bamboo/steel cap, ships that way). Best insulated: Pura Sport 22oz (silicone cap, MADE SAFE). Best two-piece: Klean Classic plus the Steel Loop Cap. Wirecutter still likes a Hydro Flask. The Flex Cap is plastic. We do not call that best.
The Dasani from the gas station is the whole problem. Heat plus PET is how you get a bottle of water that is also a bottle of plastic. A 2024 Columbia study in PNAS counted about 240,000 plastic particles per liter in bottled water, most of them nanoplastics. (Qian et al., 2024)
A steel or glass flask fixes the body. It does not automatically fix the lid. Most “best stainless” lists are ranking insulation and the chug cap. This page ranks the drink path, because you came here to get plastic off the water.
I compared current bottles against spec sheets, brand material pages, and the labs that actually review this stuff. I have not lived with twelve bottles for a season. Where I say leakproof or “keeps ice,” that is the company claim plus the pattern in independent reviews, not a stopwatch in my kitchen.
If you want the deep dive on one insulated brand, the Hydro Flask review is next door. This page is the roundup.
The lid is the catch
Same story as glass storage. The body is the healthy part. The lid is where plastic sneaks back in.
A steel bottle with a polypropylene loop cap is a half-swap. Your water sits in 18/8. You drink through #5 plastic. BPA-free is not a gold star. Manufacturers swapped BPA for cousins. We covered that in BPA-free bottles.
Silicone is not plastic. It is still a synthetic. It is the gasket this site will live with. See Is Silicone Safe? if you want the longer version.
Klean Kanteen’s own FAQ is blunt: Classic bottles come with a BPA-free PP#5 cap. The Steel Loop Cap is a separate part. The Reflect is the one they sell as plastic-free in the box: steel, bamboo, food-grade silicone. No paint. No polypropylene.
What to look for
- Lid first. Steel, bamboo-over-steel, or medical-grade silicone. Polypropylene loop caps, sport caps, and straw lids are the thing we are trying to leave.
- Unlined 18/8 or 316 stainless, or glass. No interior coating. Aluminum almost always has a liner. Skip it.
- One SKU if you can. A bottle that ships with the right cap beats a bottle plus a $15 accessory you have to remember to buy.
- Insulation is optional. Vacuum walls keep ice. They do not make the lid steel. Single-wall sweats and does not keep ice all day. That is the trade for a true metal cap on a Classic.
Best overall: Klean Kanteen Reflect 27oz

This is the bottle that actually arrives plastic-free. 18/8 steel, 90% recycled. The Bamboo Cap creates an all-stainless interior. The gasket is food-grade silicone. Klean’s page lists three materials: bamboo, steel, silicone. No paint. No polypropylene.
It is single-wall. It will sweat. It will not keep ice through a workday. That is the cost of the cap, and it is the point of this page.
Narrow enough for a lot of cup holders. Compatible with other Classic caps if you later want a sport lid, which would put plastic back in the drink path. Don’t.

Best insulated: Pura Sport 22oz

Steel bottle, medical-grade silicone Big Mouth cap, silicone sleeve. MADE SAFE certified. No polypropylene in the drink path. Double-wall, so you get cold water without a plastic chug cap.
The silicone top is not for hot drinks. That is fine. If you want coffee in a thermos, that is a different product.
Kids and adults can use the same bottle. Swap Pura silicone lids as the kid grows. That is the whole pitch, and the materials actually match it.

Best two-piece: Klean Classic + Steel Loop Cap

The Classic is the cheap steel bottle everyone already knows. The one in the box still has a PP#5 loop cap or a sport cap. That is not a plastic-free drink path.
The Steel Loop Cap is the $15 part that makes the interior all stainless, threads included. It only fits Classic narrow-mouth bottles. Klean says not for hot beverages. Buy both, or you bought a Hydro Flask with worse insulation.

If you will live with a plastic lid
Insulation lists still pick these. The body is steel. The cap is plastic. Better than Dasani. Not a “best” on this site.
Desk bottle: Hydro Flask 32 oz Wide Mouth with Flex Cap. Ice fits. You can clean it. The Flex Cap is polypropylene. Full write-up: Hydro Flask review.
Cup holder: Hydro Flask Standard Mouth 21 oz. Narrower. Same steel. Same lid caveat. This used to sit at the top of this page. It should not have.
Kids who will only use a straw: Owala FreeSip is the one they will actually carry. The lid is Tritan. If the kid will use a silicone sport top, buy the Pura instead.
Glass with a caveat: bkr is glass plus a silicone sleeve. The cap is polypropylene, not silicone. Pretty. Not plastic-free.
Hiking filter: LifeStraw Go has a steel body. The filter housing and lid are plastic. Useful in the backcountry. Not a daily plastic-free bottle.
Skip these as an endpoint
- CamelBak Eddy+ and Nalgene Tritan. Better than a disposable. Still a plastic bottle. A stepping stone, not a destination. Value on this site means less plastic, not a lower price.
- Aluminum. Needs a liner. The liner is the problem you were leaving.
- Any “BPA-free” plastic sport bottle sold as non-toxic. Read the BPA piece.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a stainless steel bottle plastic-free if the lid is plastic?
No. The water sits in steel. You drink through the cap. That is a real upgrade from PET. It is not a plastic-free drink path. This site only calls a bottle “best” when the cap is steel, bamboo-over-steel, or medical-grade silicone.
Does the Klean Classic come with a steel cap?
No. Klean’s FAQ says Classic bottles come with a PP#5 loop cap. The Steel Loop Cap is sold separately. The Reflect is the one that ships with the bamboo/steel cap in the box.
Is silicone a cop-out?
It is a gasket, not a bottle. Pura’s whole cap is silicone, which is a different bet than a PP sport lid. If you want zero synthetics, get the Reflect or the Steel Loop Cap.
What about CamelBak or Nalgene as a cheap start?
They get you off disposables. They are still plastic bottles. Value here means less plastic, not $18. If money is the only constraint, a Classic plus the steel cap is still a steel drink path.
The Bottom Line
Buy the Klean Kanteen Reflect 27oz if you want one bottle that ships without polypropylene. Buy the Pura Sport if you need insulation and will live with a silicone cap. Buy a Classic only if you also buy the Steel Loop Cap. A Hydro Flask is a fine insulated flask with a plastic lid. It is not the #1 pick on a plastic-free site.
