Quick verdict
Yes, if you want an electric kettle where hot water only sees steel. The SWK-1701 is a 1.7L double-wall kettle: 304 stainless pot, lid, spout, and rim. The cool-touch shell, handle, and lid button are not in the boil. No temperature hold. About $35-40. That is the pick in our electric kettles with no plastic roundup.
Most “stainless” kettles cheat at the lid. The pot is steel. The lid is plastic. Steam hits that lid every boil. This one does not do that. Secura’s own spec is blunt: stainless pot, stainless lid, stainless spout, stainless rim. No plastic in contact with hot water.
I compared the current SWK-1701 (also sold as SWK-1701DA/DB/DR, same kettle, different colors) against Secura’s spec sheet, the manual, and long-running owner reviews. I have not timed a boil in this kitchen. Where I say it boils fast, that is 1500W on 1.7L plus the pattern in those reviews, not a stopwatch.
Product details
A cordless 1.7 liter (1.8 quart) kettle on a 360-degree base. 120V, 1500W, ETL listed. British Strix thermostat: auto shut-off, boil-dry protection. Interior water line, no plastic window. Wide mouth so you can get a hand and a cloth in there. Two-year warranty from Secura in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Made as a double-wall: steel on the water, cool-touch on the outside so you do not grab a 212F pot.
Colors rotate: black, white, red, and a few others. The internals do not change. Street price on Amazon is usually $35-40. Direct: thesecura.com.
That is the whole product. No keep-warm. No 175F green-tea preset. You want hot water, it clicks off.
No plastic contact during use
If the water path is plastic, you are making tea in the same class of problem as the takeout tub, only hotter. A 2023 University of Nebraska-Lincoln study in Environmental Science & Technology put numbers on heat plus plastic: millions of microplastics and billions of nanoplastics per square centimeter when plastic was microwaved. (Hussain et al., 2023) A kettle is that, every morning.
On the SWK-1701 the boil sees 304 stainless. The lid that sits over the steam is steel on the inside. The spout is steel. The rim is steel. The power base, the switch, the handle, and the lid-release are plastic or a cool-touch shell. They do not sit in the water. That is the honest asterisk, same shape as a steel bottle with a plastic cap, except here the drink path is the part that got fixed.
BPA-free on the shell is not a gold star. We covered the swap chemistry in BPA-free bottles. You are not drinking through the handle.
Drawbacks
- No window. You open the lid to see the fill line. That is the cost of not putting a plastic sight-glass in the wall.
- Boil only. If you want 175F for gyokuro, this is the wrong appliance. Buy a variable-temp kettle and check the lid, or heat and wait.
- Scale. Steel kettles get limescale. Vinegar or citric acid. No coating to peel, which is the point.
- It is not quiet. 1500W of rolling boil is a 1500W rolling boil.
- Lid steam can warm the plastic button. The water still is not touching it. Do not put your face in the steam.
Which one to buy
The one: Secura SWK-1701, 1.7L. Color is cosmetic. Black is the SKU that stays in stock.

If you already read the kettle roundup, this is the deep dive on the Best Overall pick. Tea bags are a separate plastic problem. Paper or loose leaf: which tea bags are actually paper.
Who should skip it
- You need a keep-warm plate or a 175F preset. Look at the variable-temp column in the roundup and read the lid materials twice.
- You want a glass kettle so you can watch it. Glass kettles usually put plastic back at the lid. Watch a current sample.
- You only boil a mug. 1.7L is a lot of kettle for one cup. It still works. It just sits there.
The Bottom Line
The SWK-1701 is the electric kettle to buy if the job is hot water that never touches plastic. Steel pot, steel lid, steel spout, steel rim. Cool-touch shell so you do not burn your hand. About forty dollars. No theater. If you want a fancier program kettle, check the lid first. Most of them fail that test.
