Quick verdict
Buy a stainless tank if you want plastic off the water you store. Best overall: Boroux Legacy (stainless chambers, WQA-certified elements). Best certified gravity: Culligan MaxClear (IAPMO, stainless). Best filtration, glass storage: AquaTru Carafe. The housing is still plastic. We do not call that best. Skip Berkey black filters while the EPA stop-sale is in force.
A plastic pitcher that “filters microplastics” is a half-swap. The cartridge may catch particles. The water then sits in plastic. Columbia researchers reported in 2024 that a liter of bottled water can hold on the order of 240,000 tiny plastic fragments, most of them nanoplastics. Tap is cleaner than that, and still not empty. (Columbia Climate School, 2024)
This page ranks the water path. The older microplastics filter guide ranks what actually comes out of the tap. Read that if your only question is NSF 401. Read this if you do not want the clean water sitting in a plastic tank.
I compared housings, certifications, and current listings. I have not lab-tested these units. Where I say a filter removes PFAS or microplastics, that is the cert or the brand’s third-party sheet, not a test I ran.
No filter is 100% plastic-free
Cartridges are almost always plastic shells around carbon or ceramic. Spigots are often plastic. That is true of gravity cans and of reverse osmosis. The honest goal is: filtered water stored in stainless or glass, not in a Brita tank.
Ceramic candles (British Berkefeld / Doulton) are the closest thing to a non-plastic element. Carbon blocks still live in a plastic or metal sleeve. Silicone gaskets are the seal this site will live with. See Is Silicone Safe?.
What to look for
- Storage first. Lower chamber or carafe should be stainless or glass. That is the water you drink.
- Certifications. NSF/ANSI 42 (taste, chlorine), 53 (health), 401 (emerging, including microplastics), 58 (RO). WQA or IAPMO counting as the lab is fine. A PDF on a brand blog is not the same thing.
- Spigot. Stainless if you can get it. A plastic tap on a steel can is a small contact patch. Still note it.
- Berkey. New Millennium Concepts’ black elements have been under an EPA stop-sale. Do not treat “Berkey” as the default buy in 2026. The steel can is just a can. The elements are the problem.
Best overall: Boroux Legacy
304 stainless upper and lower chambers. Gravity. No plumbing. WIRED’s 2026 steel-filter test kept it as the pick for most people: WQA Gold Seal to NSF/ANSI 42, 401, and 372, plus third-party work on chlorine, PFAS, and lead. Lifetime warranty on the steel.
The Foundation filters are still carbon in a sleeved element. The water you pour lives in steel. That is why it is on this page and a plastic RO tank is not.
Priming is tedious. The can is tall. It is a counter object, not a pitcher you hide in the fridge.

Best certified gravity: Culligan MaxClear
Stainless gravity can. IAPMO certified to reduce microplastics, lead, and total PFAS. WIRED called it the best-certified steel gravity system they ran. Cheaper upfront than Boroux.
The trade: slow flow, and the ceramic-carbon elements want replacing on the order of months, not years. You pay for the cert in filter cost. If you want a paper trail more than a pretty can, this is the one.

Best ceramic candles: British Berkefeld
The old name, still the right company: Doulton, Staffordshire, ceramic candles since the 1800s. Stainless stacked chambers. Ultra Sterasyl elements are NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastics. Ceramic is the filter, not a plastic cartridge with a ceramic sticker.
US Amazon listings still say “ATC Super Sterasyl” on some kits. That is the older candle name. Buy Ultra Sterasyl if you have the choice. Direct from Doulton if the Amazon kit looks dusty.
It will not match AquaTru’s contaminant list. It will match this site’s materials list.

The plastic-housing RO testers like
AquaTru Carafe is the filtration champ on the other page, and it still is. IAPMO to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, and 401. Countertop RO. No plumber. Filtered water lands in a glass carafe. That is the honest part.
The machine around that carafe is plastic. The dirty tank is plastic. If you came here to get plastic off the water path, this is a stopgap with a glass ending, not a “best.”
Use it if you need the cert list (fluoride, PFAS, lead, microplastics) and you will drink from the glass, not from a plastic RO tank. Do not crown it because the carafe photographs well.

How to choose in 30 seconds
- Default, plastic off storage: Boroux Legacy.
- Want the gravity cert sheet: Culligan MaxClear.
- Want ceramic candles, old-school steel can: British Berkefeld / Doulton.
- Need RO numbers (fluoride, the long contaminant list) and will drink from glass: AquaTru Carafe. Housing is still plastic.
- Do not buy a new Berkey black-element kit while the stop-sale holds.
The Bottom Line
A filter that dumps clean water into plastic is the pitcher version of a glass bowl with a plastic lid. Buy Boroux, Culligan, or Berkefeld so the water you store sits in steel. AquaTru Carafe is the right machine if you need RO and you will pour from the glass. Not the thing to call best on a plastic-free page.
