Quick verdict

Buy stainless for the food. Skip the plastic bento. Best overall: PlanetBox Rover (one-piece stainless tray). Best fully metal: ECOlunchbox Three-in-One (no silicone, no plastic). Best on a budget: LunchBots Large Cinco. Bentgo Kids Stainless seals yogurt better. The latches are plastic. We do not call that best.

A plastic bento in a hot backpack is the same problem as the takeout tub in the microwave. Heat plus scratches. A 2023 University of Nebraska-Lincoln study in Environmental Science & Technology showed microwaving plastic released millions of microplastics and billions of nanoplastics per square centimeter. A lunch box does not have to hit 100C to matter. It sits in a car, a cubby, a bag. Acidic food (tomato, citrus, yogurt) pulls more out of plastic than water does. (Hussain et al., 2023)

Stainless does not do that. 18/8 (304) is food-grade. It does not stain like cheap plastic. It lasts long enough to hand down. That is the swap.

I compared current boxes against spec sheets, brand material claims, and long-term reviews. I have not packed these for a child. Where I say leakproof, that is the brand or a tester, not a test I ran.

The older non-toxic lunch boxes roundup covers jars and accessories too. This page is stainless only, because that is the food-contact job.

The lid is still the catch

Same story as glass storage and the Hydro Flask. The tray can be steel. The lid is where plastic sneaks back in.

A “stainless” lunch box with a plastic lid, plastic latches over the food, or a plastic divider is a half-swap. Yogurt against that lid is still plastic-to-food contact. Silicone is not plastic. It is still a synthetic. It is the gasket this site will live with for a leak seal. See Is Silicone Safe? if you want the longer version.

BPA-free on a plastic bento is not a gold star. We covered the swap-to-BPS problem in BPA-free bottles.

What to look for

  • Food path first. Tray, lid interior, and dividers should be stainless. Silicone gaskets are the leak trade. Plastic lids and plastic latches over the food are the thing we are trying to leave.
  • 18/8 or 18/10 (304). That is the food-grade alloy. Skip mystery “stainless look” coatings.
  • One-piece tray if you can. Stamped compartments do not lose a divider in the dishwasher.
  • Leak reality. Bare steel lids are not yogurt-proof. Pack wet food in a steel or silicone cup, or pick a gasketed lid and know what that gasket is.

Best overall: PlanetBox Rover

Five compartments stamped from one piece of stainless. Stainless latch. No plastic in the tray. Wirecutter still uses it as the durable steel bento. Dishwasher safe. Heavy. That is the cost of not using plastic, and it is the point.

It is not a soup box. Wet food goes in the optional Dippers. Those Dippers have silicone lids. The main tray is steel.

Best fully metal: ECOlunchbox Three-in-One

Three nesting stainless containers held with stainless clips. No silicone. No plastic. Food touches steel. That is the cleanest materials list on this page.

It will leak if you pack yogurt without a separate sealed cup. It is a dry-lunch and leftovers box, not a bento with a gasket. If you want zero synthetics on the food, this is the one.

Best on a budget: LunchBots Large Cinco

Five-section stainless tray. Stainless lid. Lifetime guarantee. Lighter and cheaper than a Rover. The colorful lids add a food-grade silicone edge seal. No plastic on the food.

Same leak rule as PlanetBox: saucy food needs a cup. For a weekday grain-plus-fruit box, this is the one I would actually buy if money is the constraint.

The leak box testers like

Bentgo Kids Stainless is the one people buy when yogurt has to survive the backpack. The tray is stainless. The lid is contoured with silicone seals. The snap latches are plastic. That is why it wins leak tests, and that is why it is not a “best” on this site.

If a gasketed box is the difference between switching and keeping the plastic bento, you can use it as a stepping stone. Then treat the lid as the problem it is:

  • Food that sits against the lid still touches silicone, not steel.
  • The plastic latches are exterior. Do not pretend the whole box is plastic-free.
  • Replace with PlanetBox or ECOlunchbox when you can, instead of buying a second plastic-latch set because it was on sale.

How to choose in 30 seconds

  • Default: PlanetBox Rover. One-piece stainless tray. That is the one this page is for.
  • Want nothing but metal: ECOlunchbox Three-in-One.
  • Watching money: LunchBots Large Cinco.
  • Only if a gasketed lid is the difference between switching and keeping plastic: Bentgo Kids Stainless, and plan to replace the latches later.
  • Hot soup: skip the bento. Use a stainless food jar. The kids lunch box piece covers the Zojirushi. The outer lid on that jar is still plastic. The food sits in steel.

The Bottom Line

Stainless is the lunch container that matches the heat-and-scratch science on this site. Buy PlanetBox, or ECOlunchbox if you want zero silicone, or LunchBots if you are watching money. A Bentgo with plastic latches is still a steel tray under a gasketed hat. Fine as a stopgap if that is what gets the plastic bento out of the backpack this week. Not the thing to call best.
